Breanne joined us at the Automotive News Leading Women Conference where she sat down with Jocelyn Hudak, Senior Director, Content and Digital Marketing, to discuss the importance of making time for others and supporting her teams. Listen to her full interview below, and then check out some highlights from the conversation.
Have real conversations.
Highlight: “I know that I grew so much in every role that I had, because I made it a point to have real conversations, not hide behind emails, not hide behind chat messages. But I'm going to go talk to someone, or I'm going to pick up the phone and have a voice conversation so that things don't get lost in translation, or confused, or misconstrued. And in doing that, I built relationships where people trust me and have confidence in the way that I work. And that just doesn't happen if you don't get up and go speak and interact with people around you.” - Breanne Carpenter
Take time to listen.
Highlight: “Listen to people. When you go to a meeting, or when you're having a conversation, so much is lost because people aren't paying attention. If you really use the time and listen to what people have to say and pay attention to what's going on, you get so much more out of every interaction that you have, whether it's because you're being briefed on something or because someone has something important to say. We have the ability to multitask, which just makes us less good at everything that we're doing.” - Breanne Carpenter
Stay available for others.
Highlight: “I don't ever want to be the boss that won't help or won't be available if you need it. You are not an island. It goes both ways. You're helping me by stepping in and getting stuff done, but if you need it, I am always available. I'm here for whatever needs to get done.” - Breanne Carpenter
Be there to help lead and guide.
Highlight: “From a leadership perspective, I think that's an area where I'm still growing, where I don't need to do every job. I need to do the things that I am there to help lead and guide, and step more out of the day to day. And that is something I'm constantly challenging myself to do, and give the people around me that ownership and leadership to step into something, to take on new challenges and then be there for them as they need be.” - Breanne Carpenter
Prove it to yourself.
Highlight: “I needed to prove to myself that I was good at my job outside of the world where I knew everything… And I had this moment where I questioned, ‘Could I do this somewhere else? Was I actually good at this job, or was I just good in the space that I was in?’ It had to be really intentional for me to [say], ‘I don't know this. I don't know this client. I don't know these people. I don't know this agency. I don't know how anything works. Can I go and do this somewhere else?’ And I did.” - Breanne Carpenter
